The Casual Vacancy: J. K. Rowling

The Casual Vacancy is about a man named Barry Fairbrother, and his death. Based in the town of Pagford, war erupts after his death to gain his city council position. The people of Pagford try to cope with the loss of the towns handyman, the person they could always look up to. Even the children are effected, seeking shelter in the school.

In the Casual Vacancy, Kristal Weedon, Andrews lover, lives in a poor neighborhood. She has a 4 year old sibling, who, thanks to her moms negligence, does not know how to go to the bathroom by himself or flush the toilet. The whole house stinks of pneumonia. I think this section of the book is very important because it shows that what looks like an average schoolgirl has such a terrible lifestyle. The whole house has old newspapers and garbage thrown all around it. The whole thing is a mess, and I think its important for authors to do this. It shows we are not oblivious to the worlds problems, and we need to coe together and help resolve them.
